  • Mississippi: In 2022, Mississippi reported the highest motor vehicle fatality rate in the nation, with 23.9 deaths per 100,000 residents. ​
  • South Carolina: This state had the highest death rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in 2022, at 1.85 fatalities. ​
  • Rhode Island: Rhode Island reported the lowest death rate per 100 million VMT in 2022, at 0.69 fatalities. ​
  • District of Columbia: The District of Columbia had the lowest motor vehicle fatality rate per 100,000 people in 2022, with 4.8 deaths. ​
