Vehicle Involvement

Understanding which vehicle makes and models are most frequently involved in accidents can provide valuable insights into road safety. Below is a comprehensive analysis based on various studies and data sources:

Vehicles Involved in the Most Fatal Accidents (2016–2020)

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) analyzed by TitleMax, the following vehicles were involved in the highest number of fatal accidents between 2016 and 2020:

  • Chevrolet Silverado: 8,777 fatal accidents
  • Ford F-150: 7,502 fatal accidents
  • Honda Accord: 5,368 fatal accidents
  • Toyota Camry: 5,023 fatal accidents
  • Dodge Ram: 4,666 fatal accidents
  • Honda Civic: 4,648 fatal accidents
  • Nissan Altima: 3,746 fatal accidents
  • Toyota Corolla: 3,641 fatal accidents
  • GMC Sierra: 3,567 fatal accidents
  • Ford Explorer: 3,139 fatal accidents

It's important to note that the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150 are among the best-selling vehicles in the U.S., which may contribute to their higher numbers in fatal accidents.

Driver Death Rates by Vehicle Model (2018–2021)

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) provides data on driver death rates per million registered vehicle years for 2020 and equivalent models during 2018–2021:

  • Overall driver death rate: 38 deaths per million registered vehicle years
  • Highest driver death rate: Mitsubishi Mirage G4 (205 deaths per million registered vehicle years)
  • Lowest driver death rate: Several models reported zero driver deaths

These statistics highlight significant variations in driver death rates across different vehicle models.

Vehicles with the Highest At-Fault Accident Rates (2023)

An analysis by Insurify identified the following vehicles with the highest percentage of drivers reporting at least one at-fault accident in 2023:

  1. Audi S4: 11.7% of drivers
  2. Scion iA: 11.5% of drivers
  3. Hyundai Genesis Coupe: 11.3% of drivers
  4. Subaru WRX: 10.7% of drivers
  5. Toyota GR86: 10.8% of drivers

These figures suggest that certain models, particularly sports and performance-oriented vehicles, have higher rates of at-fault accidents.

Brands with the Highest Driver Incident Rates (2024)

A study by LendingTree examined incident rates (including accidents, DUIs, speeding, and citations) per 1,000 drivers for various car brands in 2024:

  • Tesla: 36.94 incidents per 1,000 drivers
  • Ram: 33.92 incidents per 1,000 drivers
  • Subaru: 32.85 incidents per 1,000 drivers

These brands reported the highest incident rates among the analyzed data.

Considerations

While these statistics provide insights into vehicle involvement in accidents, it's essential to consider factors such as vehicle popularity, driver demographics, and usage patterns. Higher sales volumes can naturally lead to higher numbers of accidents for certain models. Additionally, performance-oriented vehicles may attract drivers with a propensity for riskier driving behaviors, potentially contributing to higher accident rates.

For a more comprehensive understanding, consulting official reports from the NHTSA and IIHS is recommended, as they provide detailed analyses of vehicle safety and accident statistics.
